R. Stephen Stagner is the Executive Chairman and Chairman of the Board. In his role, he is responsible for the successful integration of recent acquisitions, investor communications and the long-term strategic vision for the Company. He joined the Company as Chief Operating Officer in 2005 as a result of the merger between Mattress Firm and his former Mattress Firm franchise. From 2006 until his promotion in 2010, Mr. Stagner served as the Company's Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. He was promoted to President and Chief Executive Officer in February 2010 and served as the CEO of Mattress Firm until March 2016. He oversaw Mattress Firm’s initial public offering in 2011 and guided the Company’s growth from $400 million in sales to over $3.5 billion in pro forma sales in 2015. Mr. Stagner has over 20 years of experience in the bedding industry, including employment with mattress manufacturers Sealy Corporation and Simmons Bedding Company, and owning and operating the largest franchise in the Mattress Firm network. Mr. Stagner has also served in various capacities with the Mattress Firm Foundation, including as its President since January 2011 and director from January 2007 until December 2010. Mr. Stagner also serves as director of Rousche College of Business Advisory Council at Stephen F. Austin State University.
Ken Murphy is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Mattress Firm. In this role, Ken is responsible for all sales, marketing, merchandising, finance and operations functions at the Company.
Ken first joined Mattress Firm in 1998 as a retail sales associate for a Mattress Firm franchise, and has held a variety of roles with increasing responsibility within the sales and operations areas. Mr. Murphy previously served as the Company's Executive Vice President, Sales and Operations from 2012 until 2014, after holding positions including National Vice President of Sales, Director of Training and Recruiting, Vice President of Field and Talent Management and Regional Vice President of Sales. His continued success in these roles led to his promotion to Chief Operating Officer in 2014 and to President in 2015.
As President of Mattress Firm, Ken was responsible for all sales functions of the Company, including eCommerce. His strong leadership, broad operational experience and passion for the Company has helped spur Mattress Firm’s growth and success. As Chief Executive Officer Ken will continue to build upon current strategies and initiatives to drive consistent and profitable growth and to create new opportunities for all stakeholders. Mr. Murphy is also currently serving on the Stephen F. Austin University General Business Advisory Board.
Adam Blank, joined Sleepy’s in January 2003 as General Counsel and Executive Vice President. In December 2008 he was promoted to the role of Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel and effective February 5, 2016 Adam is now the President of Sleepy’s. Prior to joining Sleepy’s, Mr. Blank was an associate at the law firm Tannenbaum Helpern Syracuse & Hirschstritt LLP (from October 2001 to December 2002), where he acted as outside general counsel to the company. Prior to that, Mr. Blank was an associate at Squadron Ellenoff Plesent & Sheinfeld LLP (from May 2000 to October 2001) and an associate at Phillips, Nizer, Benjamin, Krim & Balloon, LLP preceding that (from October 1998 to April 2000). He began his career as an associate at Kaufman, Schneider & Bianco, LLP (from August 1996 to October 1998). Mr. Blank received his B.A. in Government and Politics from University of Maryland at College Park and his J.D. from Hofstra University School of Law.
Alex Weiss became the Company's Chief Financial Officer in July 2014. He previously served as the Company's Senior Vice President, Finance from April 2013 until July 2014, focusing on forecasting, budgeting, corporate strategy, investor relations and mergers and acquisitions. From September 2008 to April 2013, Mr. Weiss served as Associate and then as Investment Banking Vice President of Barclays Bank PLC. From July 2004 to September 2008, Mr. Weiss was an Analyst and then Associate at Lehman Brothers Inc., where he served on the Investment Banking Global Advisory Committee. Mr. Weiss has experience in a wide range of investment banking disciplines, including mergers and acquisitions, debt and equity offerings, strategic analysis and corporate advisory, with a focus on the bedding sector. Mr. Weiss is married to Ruyin Xue, an employee of the Company working on business development matters.
Karrie Forbes currently serves as the Company's Chief Business Officer. She held the position of Chief Marketing Officer from November 2014 until February 2015. She was the Company's Executive Vice President, Marketing from April 3, 2013 until November 2014. Since January 15, 2012, she had served as the Company's Executive Vice President, Marketing and Merchandising. Prior to this appointment, she served as the Company's Vice President of Marketing for four years. Ms. Forbes is responsible for the strategic direction of the marketing, advertising and communication functions of the Company. Ms. Forbes joined a Mattress Firm franchise in 1997 and held positions of increasing responsibility in sales, customer service, recruiting, training and advertising through 2005, when she joined Mattress Firm as Director of Merchandising. Ms. Forbes also serves on the advisory board with the Better Sleep Council. Ms. Forbes is married to Matthew Forbes, the Company's Senior Vice President, Logistics & Distribution.
As chief merchandising officer of Mattress Firm Holding Corporation, Craig McAndrews drives the Company’s merchandising strategy, and leads the product development and pricing strategies for the enterprise.
McAndrews joined Mattress Firm in 2009 as regional sales manager, and was promoted to vice president of merchandising in February 2010, where he led the effort to introduce the Hampton & Rhodes brand and the expansion of adjustable base category at the Mattress Firm brand. He was then promoted to executive vice president of retail concept development in February 2012, where he was responsible for the development and testing of alternate retail operating formats and continued franchise development.
Prior to joining Mattress Firm, McAndrews was the owner and director of Innovative Retail Group from 2003 to 2009. From 1999 until 2003, he was President of a Mattress Firm franchise, and played a key role in the company’s expansion into Arizona. Previously, he was vice president of sales at Simmons Bedding Company. Craig graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a bachelor’s degree in marketing.
Jody Putnam currently serves in the role of Talent & Integration Officer for Mattress Firm, where he serves as the primary liaison for all integration activities. He most recently served as the Senior Vice President of Human Capital before accepting his current role. Mr. Putnam joined Mattress Firm in 2001 and has worked in multiple areas of the business during his time with the Company, including positions in sales leadership such as Regional Vice President of Sales, Regional Sales Director and District Manager. In 2007, Mr. Putnam was recognized with the District Manager of the Year award.
Kindel L. Elam joined Mattress Firm in July 2012 as Vice President and General Counsel, responsible for providing guidance on legal compliance and responsibility. From 2004-2012, Ms. Elam worked at Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P. where she served as Senior Associate for the last two years. During that time period, Ms. Elam spent one year on secondment in Tokyo, Japan with Mitsui & Co., Ltd., a Japanese trading company traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Ms. Elam has experience in a wide range of legal activities, including mergers and acquisitions, public and private securities transactions and finance.
Matthew Forbes became the Company's Senior Vice President, Logistics and Distribution, effective February 4, 2015. Mr. Forbes held the role of Vice President, Logistics and Distribution from May 2014 until February 2015. Prior to that, Mr. Forbes was the Company's Vice President, Divisional Sales. Mr. Forbes joined a Mattress Firm franchise in 1997 and held positions of City Sales Manager, District Sales Manager and, initially, Store Manager. Mr. Forbes is married to Karrie Forbes, the Company's Chief Business Officer.
Cathy Hauslein currently serves as the Company's Senior Vice President and Chief Accounting Officer. Ms. Hauslein joined the Company in April 2014. From 2007 until she joined the Company, Ms. Hauslein served as Vice President and Corporate Controller for Susser Holdings Corporation (NYSE: SUSS), which operated over 570 retail convenience stores and a master limited partnership distributing wholesale fuel based in Corpus Christi, TX. She held the position of Vice President and Corporate Controller for Banctec, Inc., which provides hardware, software and business process outsourcing for management of high volume and data intensive information, from 2001 to 2007.
Abby Ludens currently serves as the Senior Vice President of Human Capital. She joined Mattress Firm over 15 years ago in the Atlanta market. Prior to her current position Mrs. Ludens had served as the Vice President of Talent Management. She has also held the titles of Director of Talent Acquisition & Retention, National Recruiting Manager, and other sales management positions. Mrs. Ludens has launched several programs designed to attract, retain and advance talent within the organization. While in the field, she earned the honors of Most Improved Store Manager and Store Manager of the Year, and after joining the recruiting team, she received the You Make a Difference Award. Ms. Ludens is married to Cory Ludens, Vice President of Culture & Leadership Development.
Sam Woods was promoted to Senior Vice President, Sales and Operations effective January 29, 2014. Mr. Woods joined Mattress Firm in 1997 and has held several positions, including District Manager in multiple markets from 2000-2006, Regional Manager overseeing the East and Southwest regions from 2007-2010. He was promoted to Regional Vice President—Southwest, Gulf Coast in February 2010 and held that position until becoming Divisional Vice President in February 2012. From 1997 to 2000, Mr. Woods operated a franchisee of the Company in the Indianapolis and Cincinnati markets.
